Everybody who has had some passion for writing probably wondered about the possibility of writing a novel in the past. Imagine having your own thick pile of literature written by nobody else but you. Then dreams become wilder and thoughts of having these novels published come into mind, without considering the amount of effort and talent that goes through the publication of a novel.

Unfortunately, a very small fraction of these started novels even finish the first draft. As mentioned, writing a good novel takes a lot of time, dedication, talent, and even research. Not all aspiring novel writers have these qualities and it is through this works with potential get scrapped. Writing is not a full-time business for most people, so there's also the issue of work and related social activities that get in the way of writing.

But if you are really interested in making your first novel, you should still take a shot. Who knows, you might be able to finish at least your first draft.

Short stories are, well, short and more manageable. You have to first get the gist of the story first before concentrating on the details. Many of the world's acclaimed authors knew what the ending of their story would be years before they actually got to sit down writing the entire thing.

Concentrate on the basics and know the important components of effective story-telling. There should be well-sketched characters who would give life to the story, a setting that is specific and relevant, and a compelling plot that requires years of understanding and studying before it can be fully discussed. If you are having difficulty with details, try to jot down a few bits every now and then if you have the time and mark them as something that you have to expound on in the future.

And like with everything else in the world, you have to practice, practice, and practice some more. This is why it is recommended to write a short story first before embarking on a full-pledged writing spree.
