Filter Less Tanks, Is It Possible?

Thank author of this post/comment

Can a tank go on without filters? The answer would be both yes and no. Pursing without the proper knowledge could lead you to fish kills but if you know what you're doing then great.

When I started fish keeping a year ago, most of the shop I've checked out suggested that I should install filter system; some even suggest the best and most expensive ones. A filter is a desirable tool for fish keeping but even without it, a tank could survive with proper care and knowledge.

The main job of a filter system in to keep a tank's water to be at its optimum quality, clear them from pollution, and oxygenate for the benefit of the inhabitants. A good and working filter system also needs periodic maintenance. A poorly maintained filter is even worse than having no filter at all.

An aquarium is a closed ecosystem so its inhabitants are the main source of pollution. Keeping less fish would be easier than heavily stocked tank. Fish food is also source of pollution both eaten and uneaten. Eaten food would be digested by your pets and would then turn to natural waste while the uneaten food would just decompose. Feed your stock only with the right amount of food. Small population means less biological waste to produce.

Expect as faster water deterioration without a filtration system. Therefore you need to have a regular water change. I doesn't necessary mean that you should drain and replace the water if it's not looking good. Partial but regular water changes could be done.

With lower oxygen in your tank, smaller fishes are recommended. They consume a lot less oxygen than the bigger ones. You can also select breeds that can tolerate water deprived oxygen, like the fishes that belongs to the Anabantid family. There are also other breeds that can thrive to such environment like some eels, lungfish, gars, etc.

The idea behind having a complete filter system is to give the hobbyist more convenience and less maintenance works, less the need in changing the water and cleaning tank more often. Filters are gadgets that have really changed the fish-keeping hobby but even without them, the hobby would still be possible.
